Salesforce just turned every TikTok scroll into a sale, and brands get to keep the customer
Salesforce has teamed up with TikTok to let shoppers buy products without ever leaving the app, and the retailers behind those sales say they will keep the customer.
The announcement, published October 5 by Jon Stahl, who leads product and ISV partnerships for Commerce Cloud, arrives as social shopping keeps climbing. According to Salesforce Shopping Index data, 27% of consumers bought something on a social shopping platform in the past three months. Gen Z leads at 48%, with Millennials at 37%.
The partnership covers three pieces of TikTok's shopping machinery. Commerce Cloud will natively power TikTok Shop, where shoppers can browse, check out and view orders synced to a brand's B2C Commerce catalog. It will also support Buy Direct ads, which use the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to handle checkout, and it will give enterprise brands a central spot to feed their catalogs to TikTok's Shopping Assistant.
The detail that matters most to retailers is who ends up owning the relationship. Even though the purchase happens on TikTok, the brand stays the merchant of record. That means it still gets the shopper's contact details, purchase history and preferences, and it handles returns, customer service and follow-up email campaigns. For a retailer nervous about handing its customers to a social platform, that is the whole pitch. Salesforce says brands won't have to lean on a third party for the parts of the customer journey that usually decide whether a one-time buyer comes back.
The company is also betting that friction is the enemy. Sending someone from a video to a retail website, it argues, feels like a jarring interruption and drags down conversion. Buy Direct is designed to remove that jump, so a shopper can buy the moment they spot a product in a video or ad. Salesforce adds that agentic channels, where AI assists with product discovery, have grown 200% year over year, and the integration is meant to put brands in front of shoppers using TikTok's AI-powered search and Shopping Assistant.
Under the hood, the system runs on two things. The first is Commerce Connect, a new native B2C Commerce capability for pushing a catalog to wherever shoppers search. The TikTok Shop integration is its first major TikTok deliverable and is set for general availability in January 2027. Salesforce says it needs no custom code or cartridge installation, and brands can manage products, inventory, promotions and pricing from one place. The roadmap also includes an ads catalog feed sync and measurement tools, including a pixel and a server-side events API, to help optimize campaigns.
The second is UCP Checkout, which Salesforce describes as an open-loop layer. Discovery happens on TikTok, while the brand's own Commerce Cloud infrastructure processes the transaction without bouncing the shopper to a retail site. It is agnostic to payment provider and order management system, and it will work out of the box with Salesforce Payments and Salesforce Order Management. A phased rollout is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, and conversion data from TikTok Ads is meant to flow back into Commerce Cloud so merchants can tune their spend.
There is a catch, which is timing. Nothing described here is live yet, and the performance claims come from Salesforce itself. Brands will want to test how much the in-app checkout actually lifts conversion, and how much customer data really flows back, before reworking their strategy around it.
The direction, though, is hard to miss. As shopping and entertainment keep blurring together, the fight is shifting to who controls the moment of purchase, and Salesforce is wagering that retailers want to keep that moment, and the customer attached to it, for themselves.
